A guide for independent online sellers

There are many businesses that an individual can engage in to make money. For some people, being involved in a business is their full-time job while others are involved in it as a part-time job to make extra money. An independent online seller is a retailer that has an online store of their own and is responsible for every need of the store including sales, merchandising, marketing, and staffing. The implication is that they have their website where they sell their products as opposed to selling through online marketplaces. Online marketplaces are platforms where various sellers can register and sell their products. This article will provide general information and guidance for individuals who want to become an independent online seller.

Determining what to sell

The first thing to do when you want to become an independent online seller is to determine what you want to sell. There are thousands of products and hundreds of niches that you can decide to sell in. You might want to limit yourself to selling just a particular product or providing a particular service. There is also the option of selling various products that are within a particular niche or selling various products across various niches. Hence, you should determine what you want to sell first.

Planning

The next thing is planning for your independent online store. How many countries do you wish to deliver to for a start and which countries do you wish to spread out to, in the future? Which companies are you going to be using for shipping? How are you going to build your website? Would you contract the development and maintenance or you are going to have an in-house IT team that would be responsible for the development and maintenance of the website? How do you intend to set up your customer service team? What is it going to cost you to implement your plans? Are you going to be selling products made by yourself, products made by others or a combination of the two? How are you going to accept payments from those who make orders? You would need to read advice before sending money abroad to get some more knowledge about international funds transfer and how you can receive payments from customers in other countries. These questions and many more would need to be answered in your planning phase.

Implementation

After you have finished planning, the next thing would be implementation. You would need to put in place a structure for your independent online store to operate seamlessly. The implication is that at the end of this implementation phase, your online store would be ready to start taking orders from customers and delivering the products ordered to them at their location.

Marketing

Once you have finished implementing and your store is ready to start, you would need to market your store to the right audience. This could also be achieved online through digital marketing. This does not mean that you cannot exploit offline marketing options if you should.

Service delivery

For your independent online store to stand the test of time, you must be ready to continue to invest in it until it can get even. You would also need to ensure that you deliver quality goods and services to your customers so that they can continue to patronize you and even recommend other people. This would help your store to grow quickly.
